LABYRINTH AND EQUILIBRIUM. II. 'THE MECHANISM OF THE DYNAmC FUNCTIONS OF THE LABYRINTH

چکیده
In a previous paper, 1 I have shown that the ampullae alone, without the otoliths, suffice for all the dynamic functions of equilibrium of the ear, and that the otoliths alone, without the ampullae, also suffice for all the dynamic functions except that of response to rotation in a horizontal plane. I wish now to point out what I believe to be the mechanisms by which these reactions are brought about.

Hydrostatic pressure effects on vestibular hair cell afferents in fish and crustacea.
Following the discovery of a hydrostatic pressure sensor with no associated gas phase in the crab, and the knowledge that several systems of cells in culture show long term alterations to small changes in hydrostatic pressure, we show here that vestibular type II hair cells in a well known model system (the isolated elasmobranch labyrinth), are sensitive to hydrostatic pressure. This new findin...

The inner ear is composed of the membranous labyrinth and the osseous labyrinth (1). The membranous labyrinth has two major subdivisions, a sensory portion called the sensory labyrinth and a nonsensory portion designated the nonsensory labyrinth. The sensory labyrinth lies within the petrous portion of the temporal bone. It contains two intercommunicating portions: 1) the cochlear labyrinth tha...
متن کاملAtomistic theory of mesoscopic pattern formation induced by bimolecular surface reactions between oppositely charged molecules.
The kinetics of mesoscopic pattern formation is studied for a reversible A+B⇌0 reaction between mobile oppositely charged molecules at the interface. Using formalism of the joint correlation functions, non-equilibrium charge screening and reverse Monte Carlo methods, it is shown that labyrinth-like percolation structure induced by (even moderate-rate) reaction is principally non-steady-state on...

1. A dogfish from which all six ampullae have been removed maintains its equilibrium; the righting reactions occur promptly; compensatory movements of the eyes occur in response to rotations in all planes except the horizontal; the compensatory position of the eyes is retained if the animal is held in an abnormal position. Both the static and dynamic functions of equilibrium continue, therefore...
متن کاملBalance and equilibrium, I: The vestibule and semicircular canals.
In this, our second temporal bone installment, we will emphasize the vestibular portion of the labyrinth, that relating to balance and equilibrium. Before proceeding, we must again remind the reader of the basic structure of the labyrinth: an inner membranous labyrinth (endolymphatic) surrounded by an outer osseous labyrinth with an interposed supportive perilymphatic labyrinth. We recommend pe...
